paychecks and one of the things, randi, that is so disappointing. this fiscal cliff didn't come out of no where. we knew it was coming, it was rolling our direction. but one thing frustrating americans is it seemed like the cliff was being ignored or put on hold while the campaign was going on. it was the day after the election. we saw the dow drop 300 points and suddenly everyone woke up and said we have to face this cliff and the question is, can they really address these issues in the next 24 days with the president heading for vacation and congress about to go home? it doesn't feel good. >> no. in terms we're waiting to find out if we're going to go over the cliff, but we're already seeing the effects of it, aren't we? a lot of americans without jobs and just the fear of going over the cliff is affecting it because it's affecting hiring. >> without a doubt. you wonder if it's affecting big business or small business. corporate ceos are simply sitting on their hands. you are seeing u.s. corporations with more money on their balance sheet than they had in years. the fact that they

're talking about the fiscal cliff. well, the fiscal cliff has many components. it may be broken into many different bills that come before this body. would end to get rid of the motion to proceed so we can get those bills to the floor so we can debate them. we need to make sure that if a group say, let's block in bill from the final vote, that think express their views accountably before the public. it's the least that should happen. so the senate is headed out for the weekend. we'll be back next week, and i ask for the american public to weigh in, to think about the fact that this hidden process is hurting our ability to address the biggest issues in america. i ask my colleagues to wrestle with that. and, mr. president, it is my hope that folks will hold those conversations with the public back home. i have done so in every county of my state, through my town halls. i hold one in every county every year. i have raised this issue of whether or not when folks vote for debate they should be required to debate, they should be required to make their case, not to kill bills in the dark of nigh

to worry about and prepare for when it comes to actually going over that fiscal cliff, if the folks in washington can't get their act together? >> well, i come from a part of south carolina which has been economically challenged for quite a long time and remains so. certain parts of south carolina have developed pretty strongly. but the part where i come from, mostly agricultural, mostly manufacturing, has a very high unemployment rate, high foreclosure rate and people are having a hard time there. i've visited there a few times since i became chairman. so part of the reason that we are engaging in these policies is to try and create a stronger economy, more jobs, so that folks across the country, the o where i grew up, you know, will have more opportunity to have a better life for themselves. that's extremely important, and i think it's very important that we not just look at the numbers. it's easy toe look at unemployment rate and say, well, it's 0.1%, 0.2%, one-tenth many, many people are represented there so it's very, very important to try to keep in mind the reality of unemplo

speaker boehner is facing some intense pressure, not just when it comes to the fiscal cliff, but also over his ability to remain head of the house. several members of the g.o.p. have already hinted that they will not vote to re-elect him. just yesterday the conservative interest group american majority action endorsed georgia representative tom price to replace boehner. the group is launching a lobbying effort, trying to get more rank and file republicans on board with that vote. for now, boehner is not in any danger and a spokesman says price will not challenge him but house members can vote for anyone they choose come january 3rd. >>> when it does come to the fiscal cliff, both boehner and obama say they want more specifics. the president is promising $400 billion in reduced entitlement costs but boehner's office wants more details on what exactly those will be. and boehner is claiming he will increase tax revenue by limiting deductions and loopholes but has still failed to specify exactly which ones. at a michi

to be an arrangement made between the president and speaker boehner on our fiscal cliff that's coming up in just a few weeks. i know that all of us want to see that happen. i think that each of us knows that the very best thing that can happen for the economy in new york or tennessee or anyplace is for us to get this behind us and for businesses to begin this next year knowing that congress and the white house have worked out an arrangement to put this fiscal issue in the rearview mirror. i know that we're moving hopefully -- hopefully what we'd like to do is move not just beyond the fiscal cliff but have a fiscal reform bill in place that's in the $4 trillion, $4.5 trillion range, so that he he -- we can at least for a period of time put this issue in the rearview mirror. madam president, i want to tell you i'm hopeful that that will occur. i know there have been a lot of discussions in our caucus and your caucus about that happening. on the other hand, madam president, it's my understanding that these negotiations really aren't moving along very rapidly. we only have a few weeks left in this year. i

the iranians from going weaponized. all this fiscal cliff talk reminds us of cliffhangers in the movies but which cliff scene will washington's dare devil act look like? could we see both sides leap to safety at the last minute like paul newman and robert redford in butch cassidy or could it be more like rebels without a cause drag racing toward a danger they don't appreciate until it's too late. weekends now before the u.s. comes face to face with the fiscal cliff. tonight on "special report," house speaker john boehner says there has been no progress in negotiations with the president. he is again calling on mr. obama to come up with a new proposal. vice president joe biden says a deal could be done in 15 minutes. all this comes as the government announces a gain of 146,000 jobs in the month of november. the unemployment rate fell to 7.7%. that is the lowest in four years but that was mostly due to people who stopped looking for work. both sides agree the u.s. does not want to follow down the path of greece. what is to blame there? too much austerity or too much taxation? we'll look at the problems inside his own party, for speaker boehner. it's friday. that means the lightning round with the panel. 's not a fiscal cliff. the truth is we have a tax decision coming up and we have a spending decision coming up. truthfully, we need more spending decisions coming up. sequester is a new word that we brought up. the sequester, as you recall, mr. speaker, was the hammer that we put in place way back, one of the first big votes you and i took way back in august of 2011. that was part of an agreement that the president wanted to raise the debt ceiling. there were bills that needed to be paid. the speaker of the house, john boehner, said we're not going to expand america's credit card until we get serious about curbing spending. he said, no, mr. president, i will not raise the limit on america's credit card unless you agree to dollar-for-dollar reductions on the spending side of the ledger so that we're not just making the problem worse, we're creating a pathway to solve the problem altogether. i admire the speaker for that. and the speaker and the president agreed on this proposal. it was called the budget control act of 2011, and what it did was to create a -- a committee here on capitol hill, fi
